Walk In Pantry
Table of Contents
Open floor plans are now the norm for upcoming builds across Australia.
Kitchens hence have also become open islands of cooking activity and conversations.
That means any kitchen accidents are super visible. Clean-up also becomes a high priority, as all cleaning activity has to be done right away.
If you want to avoid a public mess and frequently need to delay cleaning, a Walk-in pantry is the clear solution.
In our journey as expert home builders in the ACT and NSW regions, we have worked on several Walk-in Pantries of varying complexities and design sense.
This piece will attempt to distill those learnings succinctly. So if you’re considering a fresh build or reconstruction project, let’s go!
Pros: Here are the key ways how Walk-ins make your kitchen more practical :
1. Storage Space: For materials as well as appliances big and small, like toasters, kettles, coffee machines, etc.
2. Privacy: The out-of-sight place for messy recipes, away from dining and living space. Best made with a cavity sliding door.
How are Walk-in Pantries designed?
1. Shape: They can be both L-shaped or U-shaped. The pantry is designed as kitchen’s extension, so should be favourably located for kitchen work.
2. Lighting: Mixture of natural and LED strip lighting.
3. Width of walkway: It should be kept 1000-1200 mm, more the better.
4. Fridge: If you want space for a future refrigerator, keep at least a gap of 2.4m by 3m.
5. Benchtops: At least 600mm. Should have shelves above and below.
6. Pantry shelves: Keep a minimum of 300 mm for storage. Top shelves should be used for stuff to be used less often.
7. Power points: Multiple appliances need this for easy use.
Materials used in Walk-in Pantries
As it is not in full display, we have a good opportunity to save on costs.
Here’s an overview:
- Should be similar to the main kitchen, for design continuity.
- For example, laminated bench tops are preferable to expensive materials like stone or marble.
- Rather than making fully closed drawers, opt for open shelves. This increases accessibility while providing increased space.
- For doors, you can use timber veneer, laminates, or other cheaper materials.
